With a multi-generational family legacy in Media for over 50 years, it's possible you will see the Daniel name on a station near you.
It started with a dream. A dream for 3 brothers to have their own careers in Radio.
Terry, Richard and Glenn Daniel lived in Sydney and would often venture out to the Royal Easter Show to watch their favourite Radio Station 2UW broadcast live from the Commemorative Building at the Show, all of them sharing a desire to watch and be like their radio heroes.
Terry being the electronics person in the family decided to build several studios at home in each of their bedrooms and they called their own station Radio 2DD, which of interest is still running as an on line Radio Station today.
The brothers would wait for an opportunistic moment when their parents were not at home to drill holes through the floor of their bedrooms and run cable under the house between each room connecting the makeshift studios together and adding speakers to other rooms at home.
Terry and Richard created Radio programs and placed them onto cassette for Church fellowship friends to listen to.
Glenn who saw his elder brothers doing announcer programs decided that he would become the 2DD News Director and supply news to each recorded show.
Terry began his Radio Career at 8HA Alice Springs in October 1976. It was in Alice that he met his wife Moira. He would see his career develop as the 2GZ Program Manager in Orange in NSW, where he also did some Television News Reading at CBN Ch 8. Terry then moved to help launch a new Station in Coffs Harbour called 2CS. They began broadcasting in December 1985 with Terry being their first Breakfast Announcer and Programme Director.
Terry purchased AIR NEWS in July 2019 and now supplies news and current affairs to 100’s of stations around Australia including many CMAA Member stations.
Richard began at 8HA Alice Springs in 1977 and from their moved to a variety of stations in NSW, Canberra and Victoria. He and his wife Julie purchased 2 commercial stations 2BH and Hill FM in 1998.
In 2002 Richard joined the Christian International Shortwave Radio facility called Voice International which was owned by Christian Vision.
Richard is still part of the CV ministry doing digital media evangelism and also still does volunteer announcing at Salt FM on the Sunshine Coast.
Glenn began his distinguished radio career as a cadet journalist at 2WS Sydney in 1982.
His career saw him working at 2WS, 2SM, ABC News Radio, 2Day FM, Triple M and as the Australian News Director for Southern Cross Austereo. [S18] He was also the co-host and breakfast news reader on Sydney’s Smooth FM until his sad passing late last year.
Glenn’s influence and his media excellence helped him to become a mentor to many current leading journalists around Australia.
He is remembered as a multi award winning broadcaster [S21] who reported and presented news for 4 decades. In 2018 his book “News Time – A Life in Radio” was published.
The Daniel families influence in the media is still evident with several of their family also joining Radio.
Mark shared his father Glenn’s love of media and joined 2MMM in Sydney in 2016. He’s still with MMM working as an Audio Imaging Producer for the Sydney team but is based in Melbourne.
Mel Fry, the daughter of Richard and Julie currently does radio shifts on SEA FM Sunshine Coast as well as programs on V 180, part of Vision Christian Media. She also does Voice over work for various clients from a home built pro studio her husband Josh developed.
This family’s love of Media has lasted for almost 50 years. With the support of their wives and now some family members in the industry, you may well see the name Daniel appearing somewhere on a station near to you.
