For the Cost of a Coffee, You Can Change Lives

It costs only a little to change the future a lot, for a young refugee in Uganda.

Can the price of a coffee really change a life? Yes, it absolutely can! Because $6 is all it takes to feed a refugee child every day for a whole month.

That’s the message of Feed The Hungry as they launch ‘Take Away Hunger Dayon Thursday, August 22.

The event calls on Australians to dig deep in support of some of the world’s most vulnerable children: refugee children in Uganda. These are children who have fled violence and tragedy in South Sudan and they’re often alone, hungry and struggling to survive.

“When hunger is your constant companion, concentration is a distant relative,” said Feed The Hungry Australia CEO Ben Evans. “We’re talking about feeding a child for a whole month with just $6… The meals are provided in a school environment, and we have opportunities to share the gospel.”

Providing a nutritious meal at school every day means children don’t have to worry about their next meal anymore.

Donate $6 today to feed a child for month.

Meet Alonyo

Alonyo is one of the many young people supported by Feed the Hungry. Born in South Sudan, she came to Uganda as a young refugee, alone.

“I’ve suffered a lot,” she told the Feed The Hungry team. “I came here in 2016. I was still young, only five years old. There was a war that took place where we were staying. They killed very many people.”

Alonyo had to flee her home on foot as tragically, her own family was killed.

As her body grows stronger, Alonyo is regaining the ability to study, heal, dream and plan for a new future. Photos supplied by Feed The Hungry and used with permission.

Alonyo describes her escape through the horrors in heart-breaking terms: “When you’re walking, you just walk where people are now dead. You move while crying, you move while carrying things.”

When she arrived in Uganda, Alonyo was unaccompanied by any relative and was taken in by a woman whom she calls her stepmother.

Life in the refugee settlement was lonely and it took a long time for her to begin to heal from the trauma she’d been through. The violence and devastation she’d witnessed seemed permanently seared into her mind.

A lifeline

Going to school, Alonyo found support and healing. Apart from the fun and friendship of her peers – she looks forward to having a filling, nutritious meal each day.

Your support is urgently needed to help provide Alonyo and thousands like her with a healthy meal at school.

Your gift of just $6 on Take Away Hunger Day (August 22) will feed a hungry child at school, for a whole month. More than a meal, you’ll be helping to provide education and the opportunity to know God’s love.
