96five's Live Broadcasts Raise Profile of Chaplains

Brisbane’s 96five has launched a new initiative in a partnership with Scripture Union, in the form of breakfast OB’s held in schools, highlighting the work of chaplains.

It’s called ‘The Brissy Brekky Club’, with breakfast presenters Ken and Nicky planning to travel to schools to meet students, chaplains and parents. The aim is to raise awareness among both listeners and the school community, about the importance of chaplains and the vital work they do.

The first live broadcast was held at Lawnton State School in Brisbane’s north.

The radio station already supports the work of chaplaincy through its Chappy Chats podcasts, and the Brissy Brekky club is an extension of that work.

Scripture Union (SU) chaplains work to provide a safe, positive influence for children and young people in crisis, as well as to those who just need a friend. They also provide support for staff and parents in school communities.

Right now, SU is serving more than 400,000 Queensland students, with its chaplains placed in 6 out of 10 of the state’s primary schools and nearly 9 out of 10 high schools.

“I think kids need to have stable role models” chaplain Scott shared with 96five’s Ken and Nicky. “They need to have people who care about them and show them that they matter, that they’re important and that there are great amazing things that they can be part of.”
