15 Feb 2019

Christian Radio listening increases in an ever changing media environment.

Listening to Christian radio has been on an incredible increase over the last year - reaching over 600,000 more people since survey #2, 2017 (3,650,000).

Loyal listeners tune in for almost 10 hours per week.

Christian radio has proven to be a vital part of the Australian media landscape with latest survey results showing 4,289,000 people aged 15+ tuning in each month. That's before you include the 700+ Vision radio outlets, and all those listening via online streaming and apps only.

The research looks into community radio only and demonstrates that over 1.7 million of those listeners are intensely loyal - tuning in for over 10 hours each week.

Listening to Christian radio has been on an incredible increase over the last year - reaching over 600,000 more people since survey #2, 2017 (3,650,000).

When it comes to who is actually tuning in, it’s fairly evenly split between the genders, only slightly tilting in favour of males at 53%.

A cultural surprise for most Aussies would be the age groups who are tuning in to Christian radio. 21% of Young people aged 15-24 are listening weekly - which is high considering they represent 16% of Australia’s population! This is similar for those aged 25-39. Not only are they the largest group of people listening to Christian radio at 34%, they again are well above their represented population of 27%.

Listeners to Christian radio are most likely to:

Married with children in the home – 39%

Work full time - 41%

Be degree qualified - 43%

and

Live in a household of 3 or 4 people – 46%

Interestingly only 44% of listeners to Christian radio go to church every week, with 36% saying they rarely go, or not at all. Perhaps it is because those listening to Christian radio don’t necessarily have a Christian faith. 11% of listeners to Christian radio say they have a faith in another religion, and an astounding 20% saying they have no religious beliefs at all.
